Philippe’s July 10 artist demonstration is a wonderful teaser for this August workshop.
Workshop Description
Philippe Gandiol will be presenting an “Exploring Landscapes” Workshop in August. During this workshop Philippe will review the components of a landscape painting — including landscape, seascape, and water. He will talk about composition, aerial perspective, values, colors, temperature, and edges.
Students will be looking at how to mass a scene in a few large and simple shapes and then give the illusion of details with an economy of strokes. This will result in a lively and expressive painting. Philippe will be demonstrating daily to illustrate the process. Students – Please bring one or two reference photos to the workshop. Choose images that are personally meaningful to you, as it’s best to work on something that resonates with your own experience.
Artist’s Background
Philippe Gandiol is an award-winning painter who was born and raised in France and moved to California in his early 20’s. He has painted with oils for more than 30 years. He pursued an independent program of study, taking classes in France, San Francisco, and Sacramento, and with several renowned West Coast painters. Philippe likes to paint a variety of subjects, including landscapes, cityscapes, still life, and figures, both “en plein air” and in the studio. He often works from life, believing that in that setting he can find the full range of light and colors that he wants in his paintings. Also, and even more important, he can embrace first-hand the spirit and mood of his subject.
