Philippe Gandiol – Urban Landscapes
Award-winning artist Philippe Gandiol will be presenting our July artist demonstration at The Gallery at 48 Natoma.
Phillipe’s demonstration will be about painting an urban scene. As he notes, the city is a busy place filled with moving cars and people, lights, signs of all sorts, high rises and low rises, large streets and alleys.
Philippe’s demo will be a wonderful teaser for the workshop he will be presenting in August.

It can be very overwhelming. The first thing to do is to simplify. Look for and identify a maximum of 5 big shapes that make up the scene. Squint, a lot, quiet your mind and let these shapes emerge out of the chaos. Grab your sketch book, a pen and draw them. This is your painting. You can add a few vague details here and there but that’s it.
Of course, that’s easier said than done for most of us. Philippe will demonstrate his approach to these complexities:
- With a big brush paint the selected shapes loosely on your canvas.
- You can draw them first but with just a few lines. Step back and adjust.
- Place your horizon line and vanishing point. (In a one-point perspective you’ll have only one vanishing point where all lines converge. As you tackle different points of view you may have 2 or 3 or more vanishing points [2 points, 3 points perspective, etc.)].
- Identify and locate your focal point.
- Check your composition very carefully. Step back.
- Now you are ready to actually paint the scene using values, edges, colors, highlights and accents to convey your mood and vision.
Philippe’s demo will be a wonderful teaser for the Art Workshop he will be presenting for FAA in August.
