Workshop Description

In this two-day workshop, we will discuss and practice painting the human head.  The emphasis will be on efficiency (not speed), using a limited palette, repeatable processes and a few tips here and there to build a 3-dimensional form and accurately place the features.  The goal is to be able to paint human head “studies” that capture gesture and life.

Photo references will be provided.  They have been selected as being well-suited to utilize the processes we will practice.  If you wish, you may bring a photo or two of your own, including those of family members; however, please keep in mind that our emphasis in the workshop is painting studies, not portraits — although one is the key to the other.

This workshop would be best for those who have some experience with oil (or acrylic) painting of any subject matter.

Artist’s Background

Bruce Hancock is a Northern California artist inspired by the history, places, and people of California and the Great American West.

His early self-studies began in childhood with some of the popular art education books of the times – among them, the books of Walter T. Foster, Charles Reid, John Howard Sanden, John Pike, and Richard Schmidt.

After a hiatus of many years, in his 60’s he resumed his studies with many gifted artists and art instructors, including Howard Rees, Dan Edmonson, Quang Huang, Fongwei Liu, Kathleen Dunphy, Michael Siegel, Craig Nelson, Chris Legaspi, Terry Miura, and Steve Huston.
