About the Demo
Guest artist Rebecca Guinn will demonstrate her approach to creating a floral pastel painting using soft pastel over an acrylic underpainting. She will discuss composition, simplifying shapes into strong value patterns, choosing paper and underpainting colors, and building layers of pastel to create vibrant color and texture.
About the Artist
Rebecca Guinn is a pastel artist from Placerville, California, who focuses on light, color, and everyday landscapes to reveal the quiet beauty and meaning found in ordinary moments. Working from close observation of the natural world and the spaces we often pass by without noticing, her paintings reflect a deep attentiveness shaped by a lifetime of looking.
Working primarily in soft pastel over acrylic underpaintings, she combines expressive, bold color, layered texture, and strong compositional design to create work that is both contemporary and rooted in direct observation.
Rebecca believes that paying close attention is an act of appreciation. Whether painting wildflowers, trees, creeks, or quiet corners of home and garden, her work invites viewers to slow down and rediscover the extraordinary within the familiar.
After a career in computer science and raising a family, she returned to painting full-time, bringing that accumulated experience of observation to her art.
Her paintings have been exhibited at the Crocker Art Museum Big Names Small Art auction, in the Pastel Society of the West Coast (PSWC) 99 Voices in Pastel International Exhibition, and in the Northern California Arts (NCA) Bold Expressions annual International Open Show; and she was recently named Artist of the Month by the NCA.
