(Surface Embellishments on Thrown Pottery)
Our guest artist, Marianne DeMartini will demonstrate and discuss various surface treatments on her wheel thrown vases, bowls, and votive holders. She will demonstrate her sgraffito technique, which is an artistic or decorative technique of scratching through a coating on a hard surface to reveal parts of an underlying layer contrasted in color. In the case of pottery the overlaying layer is an underglaze applied to the surface of the thrown piece of clay. She will also discuss the glazes she uses and different carving techniques she likes to use.
Marianne uses a white clay/porcelain body and a red stoneware clay which she fires to cone 6.
Marianne attended the Werkkunstschule Krefeld (College of Arts and Crafts) where she studied Ceramic Design and graduated in 1986.
Memories of childhood hikes through deep forests and lush green landscapes in Germany, the rich variety of plants in her garden in the Sierra foothills, and the ocean and sky of the Northern California coast all feed her creativity and inspire her.
Her work is in collections in California, across the US, and in Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Norway, and Spain. New work can be found online in her Etsy shop and in her studio during the yearly Placer Artists Tour or by appointment.
