February 2026 Ceramics Demo – Marisa Sayago

Ceramics February Ceramics Demonstration

Thursday, February 19, 2026, at 6 p.m.

The Gallery at 48 Natoma in Folsom

Marisa Sayago (Figurative Clay Sculpture)

This demonstration will focus exclusively on figurative clay sculpture. Marisa Sayago will go through my process of developing a small-scale human figure in clay, beginning with basic modeling, proportion, gesture, surface refinement, and hollowing, as well as surface treatment. She will discuss how posture, weight, and subtle distortion of the figure can be used to communicate emotion and psychological presence. Throughout the demo, Marisa will touch on technical considerations, problem-solving strategies, and how conceptual intent informs formal decisions during the sculpting process.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Marisa Sayago is an Argentine-American sculptor and artist who has been creating art for over three decades. She received her MFA from the University of North Texas and apprenticed under Argentine sculptor Alfredo Cantarutti, where she developed a strong foundation in figurative sculpture and anatomy. Sayago is a long-standing professor of art at Folsom Lake College, where she has taught since 1999.

Her work centers on the human figure as a vehicle for exploring universal emotional states, human relationships, and the tension between inner and outer experience. Working primarily in clay, she often exaggerates or distorts form to evoke psychological depth and emotional resonance. Her sculptures have been described as metaphors for the human condition, capturing moments of vulnerability, intimacy, and introspection.

Marisa’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. It is held in private and public collections throughout the United States, South America, and Europe, including the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. She has presented solo exhibitions at venues such as LA Artcore and has been featured in publications including Style Magazine and Sacramento News & Review.
