FAA’s August guest artist demonstration will be presented by master watercolorist, Anthony Rogone. Anthony titles his demo, “Success with Watercolor,” and, as he elaborates: “One of the joys of watercolor is discovering the many exciting ways an artist can apply watercolor on paper.”
In this demonstration, Anthony (Tony) Rogone will discuss his painting procedures from the beginning to the final product, and along the way he will demonstrate some of the various techniques he uses and will provide information on the materials he prefers. He will also present some different ways to mount and display your finished painting. Finally, he will talk about how he stays inspired to paint every day.
As Anthony notes: “Working in watercolor can be challenging and demanding, but the unexpected results can also bring joyful exhilaration!” Looking at his wonderful paintings, that joy comes shining through …

Tony’s life as an artist began when he refused to become a steelworker in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The mill was where all the men in his family made their living, and he was expected to follow suit. His artistic aims were dismissed as being foolish and impractical.
However, Tony could not give up his true calling and his passion for art. So instead of putting on a hardhat and picking up a sledgehammer, he enrolled at Carnegie Mellon University, put on a smock, and picked up a brush. After graduation, he discovered there really is truth behind the label “Starving Artist,” and decided to go back to school and get a degree in Special Education.
After obtaining his Master’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh, he relocated to Sacramento and worked as a teacher for over 30 years. During this time, he continued to develop his skills as an artist. He also began to win awards and display his work in local galleries.
After retiring from teaching, his ability to focus full time on his art resulted in a burst of achievement. He began to be accepted into Regional, National, and International Exhibitions, and to win many awards. Tony is now a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Association and the California Watercolor Association. His work has been published in three Splash: Best of Watercolor books and multiple times on the cover of Inside magazine. His work continues to be accepted into International juried competitions and win awards, including most recently the “Best of Show” Award in the Magnum Opus Show at Sacramento Fine Arts.
Tony’s favorite medium is watercolor. He enjoys watercolor’s unpredictable nature and how it can produce unique and exhilarating results. With each painting he strives to bring something beautiful into the world that will illuminate, reveal, and transform.
