April 2025 – Judy Knott

Folsom Arts Association Artist Demonstration

Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 6 p.m.

The Gallery at 48 Natoma in Folsom

Judy Knott, BA, NCA, MA

FAA’s April artist demonstration will be presented by Galt artist, Judy Knott. Painting in both Acrylics and Oils, and sometimes adding found objects, fabrics, threads, and the like, Judy creates a variety of beautiful works in a variety of interesting styles.

Judy has used collage papers throughout much of her artistic life, finding it helped her move from painting things you recognize to painting abstractly.  While she initially used pages from books  and magazines,  they didn’t always fill the bill.  She wanted papers that had her own signature on them so when she saw what a gelli plate could do, she was hooked.  Judy will be showing us some ways to make your own beautiful papers and then will make a quick abstract piece that she’ll be giving away.

Tipping the Scales by Judy Knott - April Artist Demonstration
Judy Knott is a self-taught artist who became interested in creating her own artwork while employed full-time as a data analyst and program trainer in the medical field.  Upon retiring she started studying in earnest and went on to receive her Master Artist Certification from Sacramento Fine Arts Center in 2016.

She has shown her work at the Crocker Art Museum, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Northern California Arts and Art Expo Dallas. She has built her resume by competing in, and winning awards in both local, national, and international art shows.  In 2022 she had her work accepted into the prestigious Crocker Kingsley bi-annual art show.

Her more representational artwork has been displayed at the Edward Montgomery Art Gallery in Carmel-by-the-Sea and at Fire and Rain Gallery in Folsom California.  She has had her art purchased by Kaiser Permanente and UC Davis.  She has also participated in public art programs and is displaying her art on utility boxes in Sacramento and Elk Grove.

Judy started focusing on mixed media while transitioning from representational to abstract art.  Her explorations have her using paper, fabric, thread, and cardboard to create unique pieces.  Those pieces show a rich balance of color, texture and depth.  Her artwork has been called painterly, inventive, fun and colorful, with a little wit thrown in on the side.  Her desire is to have fun creating her art and for those who see it to feel a sense of joy and connection.  She hopes viewers will do the same thing she does when she finishes a painting—that is to smile.

As a member of the Sacramento Fine Arts Center in Carmichael and Blue Line Arts in Roseville, Knott continues to learn, contribute and exhibit throughout the region and beyond.

Also at our April Meeting … members are encouraged to share any helpful hints or ‘hacks’ they may have discovered or created along their art journey.  This could be a simple “how-to” do or make something, or perhaps a tip about a good yet unexpected source for art supplies.  Think along the lines:  “Gee…I wish I’d known that when…” and share that learning with your art-pals at FAA.

No formal presentation is expected – just a minute or two…a few words will do.

Please contact Lori Anderson, President, Folsom Arts Association, for questions about our monthly artist demonstrations.
