Watercolor Portrait – Glazing Process, Applying Layers, Changing Color

Jennie Vodden - Geared Up - Folsom Arts Association - November Artist Demonstration

Join us for Jeannie Vodden’s November 9 Artist Demonstration!

Our November artist demonstration will be presented by watercolorist, Jeannie Vodden. Jeannie is a very accomplished artist, whose shown her works in galleries and businesses throughout California, including Gallery 10 and the Amador County Arts Council Gallery in Sutter Creek, Double Dip Gallery in Lodi, the Orland Art Center, and our own Gallery 48 here in Folsom. In 2020, she was awarded “signature” status with the California Watercolor Association.

For our demo, Jeannie will be working on a portrait, and will show how she uses a glazing process, applying layer upon layer, changing color and letting it mix on the paper — all with a very limited pallet (often using just three colors, and never more than five).  She’s hinted we may also be treated to “dash of fantasy” [no promises, of course].

Reflected light and translucence give me a thrill, finding the perfect type of light – gentle seconds of beauty to be captured with my camera and painted.  And, I’m in love with the simplicity of using only three hues to make unique layers of color.

Then there’s the equally thrilling experience of drawing with my pencils and coming up, by chance, with some little character with a teapot on her head and a frog for her best friend.  I spend countless hours being wrapped in a curious drawing trance, a lovely world of graphite gradations creating detail and story.

Occasionally, these two worlds coalesce to make up some gloriously silly watercolor kingdom of hummingbirds and gears and who knows what. ~Jeannie Vodden
