May 2019 – Edward Mallory
Join us on Tuesday, May 21, for Edward Mallory’s demo – Approaching a painting from a photo reference.
Edward will discuss how he approaches painting from a photo reference; the powerful advantages of premixing color before you start a painting, and how to do it. Adjusting color intensity – it’s all about the magic of those leftover palette mixtures. In the demo, Edward will finish a painting that he has in process and talk about his approach to a back-lit landscape scene.
Edward Mallory is a full time professional oil painter and painting instructor working out of his studio on Sutter Street in Folsom. With no previous art experience, Edward began painting full time in 2003, both in studio and plein air. Today, his paintings are represented by fine art galleries in the greater Sacramento area, the Bay Area, and Monterrey County. He enjoys teaching and helping people to become better painters, hosting several popular group workshops each year, as well as a Tuesday Open Paint Group, and a full load of private students.
Edward’s style falls toward that of “painterly impressionist”, focused on alla prima, wet-in-wet heavy textural brushwork. But, he believes his greatest strength as an artist is in his deep understanding of color properties, and how they influence virtually everything in opaque media painting.
